For some parents, choosing a baby name takes month of careful consideration. Others have their list saved in their notes app since they were teenagers (or younger).
Personally, when I was younger, I would spend hours reading my mum's baby name books to name my teddy bears. Many of those names have stuck with me ever since and still sit on my list today.
Lately, there's been a lot of talk around the "100-year rule" - the idea that names popular around a century ago eventually come back into fashion. Looking at today's baby name charts, it certainly seems to be true.
If you love vintage baby names with timeless appeal, this list might give you some inspiration. These are some of the classic boys' and girls' names finding their way back into nurseries, birth announcements and playgrounds once again:
Already back in fashion
Boys
- Arthur
- George
- Henry
- Harry
- Thomas
Girls
- Florence
- Elsie
- Ivy
- Violet
- Alice
If those names prove anything, it's that the 100-year rule might actually be onto something. In fact, the ONS specifically highlights Florence, Elsie, Ivy and Violet as names that have made a comeback from the early 1900s.
The vintage names we think deserve a comeback
Boys
- Ronald (Ronnie is so cute)
- Ernest (nicknamed Ernie – the cutest!)
- Albert (Albie)
- Laurence
- Arnold (Arnie? We love it!)
Girls
- Dorothy (a classic that never really went out of style, if you ask us)
- Maeve
- Norah (or Nora)
- Nancy (a favourite of mine)
- Birdie
Whether you’re all about vintage names or prefer something a little more unique and modern, one thing's for sure: old-fashioned baby names aren't going anywhere.
Now excuse us while we go and dig out those old baby name books again.
